Simple Time Management: Is Your Work Environment Holding You Back?

You’ve heard of it. Time management is a popular buzz word these days. And it’s no wonder why. How you manage your time matters. Why spend more time to get something done than you need to? But here’s the kicker.

Here’s another way of saying it. Time management is about getting a result in the least amount of time possible. And there is a lot more to doing that than most people realize.

This article will break it down. You’ll learn the small, minutes-only changes that will improve your level of productivity. And with very little effort on your part. Read on.

Your Environment

The environment that you work in has a huge impact on you. The psychological and physiological effects caused by it greatly affect your ability to focus – and therefore how quickly you can work. Not only that.

If you are in a really poor environment, your results will suffer as well. For example.

Did you know that using the wrong kind of paper makes your eyes get tired much faster? And that added stress to your body will make you tired sooner. How well do you work when you are tired?

And that is just one small example. Here’s what else is affecting you.

Try these changes. I know you’ll be delighted with the results.

- Turn off your cellphone.
- Turn off your e-mail notification sound (check the two above at set times throughout the day, rather than being distracted all day).
- Make sure that you have proper lighting. Without it your eyes will fatigue early and you’ll struggle to keep going.
- Make sure you have an ergonomic chair. One that supports your back and promotes good posture.
- Reduce noise. If you can’t make it stop, put on some ear phones to dampen it.
- Reduce distractions from other people. Hang a sign on your office door if possible asking not to be disturbed. Every distraction means a loss of focus.

There are far more. Too many to list. So I picked out the ones that will be easiest for you to change. Get started with those as soon as possible. But don’t forget this other part of your environment…

Your Organization

Do you spend a lot of time sifting through piles of paper? (or something similar) If you do, feel glad! That is some low-hanging fruit. What do I mean?

It will be easy for you to see a big jump in time management by changing your organizational habits. Looking for things not only wastes time, it causes stress as well. (“aghhh! I can’t find it. What do I do?”)

Which only makes it harder to focus — and wastes more time! See how quickly it can spiral out of control?

Do this.

Move everything you need for a project within easy reach before beginning. Make sure you never have to get up and go for a walk right in the middle of a task.

Also.

Try to develop a system for organizing things. Avoid ever just whipping things in one pile. It may be quick, but consider this.

The extra 5 seconds it takes to file it somewhere meaningful will save you between 5 and 50 minutes when you look for it later. Small changes — a big difference.
