You Hear It All The Time
“Sometimes you just have to deal with distractions… Learn to minimize them… Ignore them.”
However, I’m here to tell you, there are some distractions that need to be removed in order to improve your time management.
For instance,
If you have a 6-year-old just dying to tell you what his friend Skippy did today go ahead and listen because… believe me… he isn’t going away until you do. And if he did… you’d feel bad about putting him off.
As a matter of fact, I would urge you to check and try to make sure all the kids are taken care of. I say try because some kids are just attention hogs and will never be completely satisfied.
So, if you can satisfy them, then you can get to work on your own stuff and be much more efficient getting things done.
Isn’t that the crux of time management… getting things done?
This is especially true of time management and students… particularly nontraditional students.
I used all of these techniques throughout my years in college and graduate school.
One of My Biggest Distractions
Is working in a room that needs straightened. In that case it’s best for me to just go ahead and spend a few minutes straightening it so I can then spend hours focusing on the tasks at hand and not the tasks needing done around me.
That’s Really the Essence of Distractions.
If it’s something that will keep you from being able to focus… go ahead and remove it-take care of whatever it is-and it will be gone… no longer a distraction. If it’s something you can put off-just make a note to do it later-then do that and don’t worry about it right now.
For example as I was sitting down to write this article I realized that my dryer was done. Two of my favorite skirts were in there and, if left, were in the process of wrinkling. I didn’t even hesitate to go ahead and take care of that because it would have been such a distraction that I wouldn’t have been able to concentrate.
Following are some things that are not distractions to me, personally, but may be to others.
Turn Off the Television or Radio
For some, the television can be very distracting. I personally put it on the Weather channel and it’s like white noise… very soothing and comforting. Now, the radio I’d be very distracted by because I’d be singing along and it would have my focus.
Friends Needing “Just a Second”
If you know they really do want a second and that you’d be distracted wondering what they wanted then that would be one of those distractions to remove. If, on the other hand, what they want would distract you even more, then put them off.
It Really Is About
All the things or the few things that you find distracting and, in the end, if it’s something that will keep you from focusing… then remove it.
If you do that your time management will be greatly improved.
