Time Management Tips

It seems like the world has sped up in recent years and sometimes it is hard to just keep up with the current changes. Even worse, we often find ourselves behind schedule, distracted, and having to push ourselves in order to make up for lost time. There are simple things you can do in order to manage your time more wisely and reduce stress. Here are a few tips to consider.

Set Priorities

This is the number one requirement of time management. You have to be willing to list what jobs, tasks, or projects you need to complete, and then prioritize them using a numbering scale. As you complete work, you should reassess your priorities from time to time.

Don’t Multitask

Multitasking is one of the worst ideas in the history of the world. Not only does it reduce productivity, but it inevitably leads to higher levels of stress. So focus on one job at a time before moving on to the next. Only multitask if you must get two or more things finished in a hurry and don’t have any alternatives.

Don’t Over Do It

One of the lessons of time management is you can’t possibly do everything. Effective time management requires not only prioritizing what needs to be done but realizing that there are some things which are unimportant. Ultimately, deciding what not to do is just as important as deciding which task to focus on.

Schedule and Stick With It

Routine works best. Once you have a list of priority jobs to complete, schedule them in for a specific day. Remember that you have to stick to your schedule or otherwise it is worthless. Set aside a block of time for completing the job. As you work, you want to avoid any distractions. Whenever possible, cut ties to the outside world so you can better concentrate on your job. Turn the cell phone off, turn the phone dialer off, and forget about the Internet. Once you devote yourself completely to finishing a specific task, you’ll be amazed at how quickly things get done.

Always Plan For Tomorrow

At the end of each day, you should have a list of things you plan to do tomorrow. By doing this, you’ll avoid wasting precious time contemplating your next move when you could be working. Before you make a new list, reassess your priorities. Has anything changed? If so, you may need to make adjustments to your schedule.

Finally, understand that there is only so much time in a day. You can’t possibly fit everything you need to do in a 24 hour period. If you overwork yourself, not only will your productivity plummet but you’ll feel more stressed and anxious. Having a routine with realistic goals is the best way to manage your time wisely.
