How much of your time is spent doing things you really don’t understand why you’re doing them? Maybe you think you know why, but then again maybe you really don’t know why. And if you really knew why before you took action perhaps you could spend more time on the right actions so you could get what you want.
Why will doing this take you closer to success? Ultimately every action or project that you undertake should have a purpose. The fulfillment of that purpose should be moving you closer to the accomplishment of what you’ve identified as success. You can use time management techniques all day long, but unless those techniques are helping you to accomplish success they’re only helping you to be more active rather than productive. Productively use your time by understanding why that action is taking you closer to the desired outcome.
Why should you be doing this anyway? When you know what you’re trying to accomplish, and how that accomplishment moves you closer to success you have the power to make better decisions. Without that knowledge you make decisions that fritter away your valuable time without moving you closer to your desired end results.
Why does this benefit you or prevent you from experiencing something you don’t want to experience? This why helps you to obtain the motivation to take action or to say no to actions that are a poor use of your time. Sometimes the power to say “no” is the most valuable thing you gain from understanding why. If I asked you to add water to the gasoline in the tank of your car so you could get farther you’d say no because you know it would ruin your engine. But when others ask you to do things that dilute your time, and prevent you from accomplishing success you say “yes” because you don’t have the motivation to say “no”.
Understanding why may be the most powerful time management technique you have in your tool kit. Not only does understanding “why” help you to identify the actions that take you closer to success, help you to make better decisions, and help to motivate you; but understanding why helps you to gain clarity about the actions you choose to take or choose not to take. As a result you’ll make better use of all your resources, and you’ll search for other options when the “why” just doesn’t make sense for you.
